With a rich history dating back to 1827 when William Chisholm acquired the land, the town evolved from shipbuilding and timber industries to becoming one of Canada's most affluent communities.

Oakville's first industries included shipbuilding, timber shipment, and wheat farming. The Ford Motor Company's Canadian headquarters is a significant presence. The town merged in 1962 with neighbouring villages of Bronte, Palermo, Sheridan, and Trafalgar Township.
